AURUM's first model, Magma, is the ultimate racing road bike. It is the best performer on any road terrain, the one to be chosen no matter what the route profile and conditions

It is faster everywhere. Magma is the bike that Contador and Basso wish they had had throughout their careers. Born from experience, it’s a project that has kept them busy since they retired from professional racing.

Magma is agile, light and fast. But from the outset Contador and Basso agreed that it must be balanced in its handling: comfortable and compliant enough for long rides, yet stiff while climbing off-the-saddle. Reactive at its front end when cornering to track every tight corner with precision, yet stable to inspire confidence on even the fastest open descents.

This very special frameset has been the focus of our efforts for such a long time. It’s something that we’re both truly personally invested in – we’ve spent so many hours riding it, fine-tuning it and thinking about how to make it better than all the sensational bikes we rode during our careers.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Magma: Finding the Balance

Creating the fastest high-performance road bike on the market is a balancing act between different riding characteristics:

Stiffness

For power delivery and quick, confident handling and cornering

Comfort

For long rides and ensuring that the rider can always get the best out of him/herself

Aerodynamics

Reducing aero drag for the best efficiency and pure speed

Weight

For a lively feel and to save energy, without compromising stiffness and comfort

To achieve a bike that fulfills all this demanding criteria of perfectly balanced performance, Magma’s frame geometry is key, the soul of the frame.

Special attention was paid to keep the Magma’s soul consistent throughout the size range, and let every rider, regardless of his/her height, experience the same handling. Alberto and Ivan dreamt for years to design a bike’s frame geometry based on their experience, and it was paramount that all the frame sizes would handle that way. To achieve that, the Trail figure (the combination of the head tube angle and fork offset) was the starting point. Through experience and ride testing (with different test forks and wheel sizes) the AURUM team set an ideal Trail dimension, for the best balance of quick steering but also stability at high speed. Often small frame sizes get a compromised handling, with a long Trail that makes turning slow and unlively. AURUM Magma uses two different fork offsets depending on the frame size, which combined with the proper head tube angle results in a Trail that is always lively and fun as intended, also for the smaller frame sizes.

Stack and reach will put you in a race position for out-and-out performance, yet allow comfort for a long ride. Short, oversized chainstays contribute to a climber’s configuration, while a low bottom bracket height helps achieve an assured center of gravity coupled with a generous wheelbase that delivers a reassuring stability, however fast your descent.

GEOMETRY CHART

Stiffness: Power & Performance

Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso know as well as anybody that to perform at your best, the wattage you generate needs to be delivered to the road with maximum efficiency: a frame being stiff in the right places is crucial.

Magma is designed with high lateral stiffness at the bottom bracket area when you’re riding out of the saddle, at maximum effort, high speed or attacking a climb. It’s also made with high torsional stiffness particularly in the headtube and downtube sections – the backbone of the frame – crucial for a frameset that delivers confident handling and cornering.

Using a BB386Evo standard bottom bracket, Magma’s airfoil downtube tapers out from the headtube, maximizing torsional stiffness. The dimensions of the downtube on all frame sizes have been scaled individually for a proportionate stiffness level, so you’ll find consistent riding characteristics.

Comfort: Optimum Rider Performance

While the stiffness of key sections of Magma’s frameset are optimised for power delivery and sure handling – both in terms of geometry and details of the carbon layup – other areas are designed and tuned differently, to ensure the right level of comfort in an all-round performance bike. Riding position and frameset flexibility in the right areas are crucial for performing at your best over a long ride.

Stack and reach will put you in a race position for out-and-out performance, yet allow comfort for a long ride. The lower end of Magma’s seat tube tapers out to blend smoothly into the bottom bracket – this increases stiffness for best drivetrain efficiency, but not too stiff that traction is lost on small bumps and ruts in the road – while the thinner round upper part of the seat tube brings you some comfort. They work with the tall, thin seatstays, which flex to absorb road buzz and deliver built-in long-ride comfort.

Aerodynamics: Faster by design

An important and non-debatable goal set by Contador and Basso from the beginning of the project was to work in depth in the aerodynamic efficiency of the Magma.

Aerodynamics are very important in how Magma performs at speed and remains stable at different yaw angles. Traditional racing bikes have been split between Light or Aerodynamic, but it was essential to combine these two characteristics and make the Magma a faster bike.

More aerodynamic means riding faster under the same rider’s power output, but it also means the rider can save energy at the same given speed. AURUM’s engineering team focused on the aero profile development for the headtube, downtube and fork legs – the primary surfaces to battle the aero drag. They were carefully shaped and optimized using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software – individually for each size.

AURUM’s engineers chose to work with NACA airfoil profiles for the headtube, downtube and the fork legs. Their trailing edges of these airfoils are truncated – reducing weight and volume – at different depths depending on the frame size and the torsional stiffness needed.

Together with the advanced tube shaping, another aero-efficient design feature of the Magma is the Head Tunnel; the built-in tunnel in the head tube that subtly channels the brake lines (and electric wire in a Di2-equipped bike) into the frame. By using this design, the frame structure of Magma remains fairly simple, light and strong. The Head Tunnel design allows using standard and lighter headset, stem and handlebars when compared to other more complicated internal cable routing designs in the market. This design decision makes the bicycle easier to assemble and service, important when packing for travel, but also when trying to fit different riders to find their best biomechanical position for high-performance.

The airfoil downtube of the Magma has been sized and proportioned individually for each frame size, connecting the headtube and wide BB386Evo bottom bracket for maximum torsional stiffness, but also featuring a mid-tube section width that shields the water bottle, thinking for the best integration and aero-efficiency of the complete bicycle under real-life conditions.

Magma prototypes were tested in the wind tunnel to validate the computer generated CFD shapes, gathering valuable information for different frame sizes and setups, to finalize the small details that can make significant performance differences – to deliver you the fastest possible bike.

Weight: Made Without Compromise

Achieving a low weight was an important goal for the Magma project, however it was not to be the main focus of the development, but to have balanced overall riding characteristics. Often reaching for the last grams can result in a loss of structural strength or riding comfort.

At same time, too much focus on the weight figures could result in a not so aerodynamically optimized shaping, which after all contributes to higher speed in most riding situations.

That being said, weight was never overlooked, and in fact was always highly considered when designing the frameset as an assembly. A frame and a fork is only part (the biggest part, for sure) of what Magma has to offer, because every frameset is delivered along with another 20 parts, such as thru-axles, headset covers, fork expander, derailleur hangers and more, all of which have been designed and developed exclusively by AURUM using the best materials.

As for the frame, every Magma is handmade using a complex combination of different grades of carbon fiber, selected as the most appropriate for the various stresses experienced in different sections of the frame. Multiple prototypes were produced and tested using different carbon grades, orientations and resin types, to find the optimum blend.

The combination of Contador and Basso’s riding experience with the AURUM carbon engineers’ skills in manufacturing results in the ECT (Experience Carbon Technology) carbon layup. It’s efficient, with minimal material overlap and waste – making every frame light and strong. Made on high precision, machined steel molds, the precise surfaces are perfectly aligned, requiring little preparation for painting.

Latex-covered foam mandrels are used for optimum material compaction and resin flow, leaving the inside of every Magma frame free from crumples or mold residue. It’s strong, stiff, and light – just 805g (size 54).
