MEET MATTHIAS QJU
How did you get started in cycling?
I got into cycling because my friends and I were super interested in trying something new after 20 years of playing soccer. It was a fresh challenge and a completely different way to stay active and explore the outdoors.
What type of cycling do you practice?
I practice both road and gravel cycling, enjoying the challenge of varied terrains and the freedom they bring.
What is your AURUM bike? Why did you choose it?
I ride the AURUM Magma. I chose it because I fell in love with its design and performance from the very first ride. It’s the perfect combination of speed, aesthetics, and engineering.
Do you have a favourite route? Which one and why?
I don’t have one specific favorite route, but I love exploring new roads and gravel paths, especially around Vienna. The mix of scenic landscapes and tough climbs keeps it exciting.
How do you prepare for a ride? Do you have a special routine?
My preparation routine usually involves checking my bike thoroughly, staying hydrated, and warming up my body with light stretches or a short spin.
What other sports do you practice to complement cycling?
I complement cycling with weight training to build strength and stability, which helps improve performance on the bike.
How do you manage nutrition before and after a ride?
For long rides, I focus on eating a balanced meal beforehand, with plenty of carbs and some protein. After the ride, I make sure to refuel with a good recovery meal, often including protein and vegetables.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy their first bike?
Start with something that suits your needs and goals. Focus on comfort and fit rather than just aesthetics or brand. And don’t forget to invest in good gear like helmets and shoes.
How has cycling influenced your social life?
Cycling has been a great way to connect with others who share the same passion. It’s not just about the rides but also the friendships and camaraderie formed along the way.
How do you avoid injuries? Do you have a warm-up routine?
To avoid injuries, I always warm up with light pedaling and stretching before starting a ride. Post-ride recovery is equally important, including cooling down and stretching.
Is there a cyclist you admire? Why?
Not really, just everyone who is truly into the sport and pushes their physical boundaries.
